57 Front Street, DUMBO

I have always been really curious about this property, 57 Front Street, especially now that its on the same block as the now infamous novo clutch building (which dumbonyc did a nice historical overview of btw). I can sort of see into the apts from my apt at 70 Washington and the units look really spacious, lofty and new.

I was poking around on the Corcoran Web site and came across a listing. From the photos posted (see photos at left), looks like all my assumptions were correct -- the units are very clean, open and nicely finished. There is a new gym (according to the pics) and the unit has river views as well, something I couldn't tell from over here. The only drawback seems to be the communal laundry room.

Brooklyn Industries F&F Sale

In my last post, I mentioned that I really like Brooklyn Industries. I got an e-mail about their Friends & Family sale. My friend used to work there and I think that's how I got on their list. HipHopdx.com reports that Ghostface Killah will headline The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival along with Big Daddy Kane, Lupe Fiasco, Consequence, Skillz, Tanya Morgan and Rhymefest. The festival is set to take place in June (7, 14, 21, 22 and 23).

UNCOMMON GROUNDS

I haven't been yet, but Brooklyn Heights blog reports on a new coffee shop at the corner of Cranberry and Henry that is called Uncommon Grounds. The business Web site says the "founders of Uncommon Grounds were some of these early coffee pioneers, and in the beginning the coffee was roasted in an old peanut roaster down on the Brooklyn waterfront." Pretty cool.


In any case, they are hosting a series of "invitation only" music and comedy events.

Brooklyn Whale Goes to Sea in the Sky

According to CBS News, the baby (3,500 to 5,000 lbs) Minke whale that was swimming around the Brooklyn bay dies yesterday after swimming aimlessly in its waters for two days. It was pulled out with the help of two police divers.

David Walentas Stirring Up Trouble

I can't attend the Landmark hearing today, but I do hope it goes through.

Rumors of a plan by David Walentas of Two Trees to build on Front Street is causing heartburn for some of the 70 Washington Residents, including myself. According to dumbonyc.com, "his first attempt to build a tall building on this site in 2004 failed due to opposition from community residents."

What's strange is that he would be cannibalizing his own customers who live at 70 Washington. The proposed building would truncate our views of the bridge and significantly impact the value of the property. I guess he doesn't care now that we've all paid for the condos and the loss would be our issue to deal with. I certainly hope this isn't the case.

It would be the old Novo Clutch building, which commenters on dumbonyc.com say recently saw the "illegal removal of dangerous asbestos as well on the roof to prep for the 'cheaper' demolition of the Nova Clutch building. Without informing the public, the airborne microscopic asbestos particles due to this inappropriate removal have unnecessarily exposed the local residents unknowingly."

Spa in DUMBO

I have been meaning to try out a spa in DUMBO that is off the beaten path. I found out about it from someone in my building and dumbonyc has posted a review from CitySearch about the spa. Called Pretty Inside, it's located on the second floor of 147 Front Street. I can't wait to try it although I agree the services are a bit on the high side, although still very comparable to Bliss. One spa I really like in the city is Oasis, but I prefer the 32nd and Park location. Definitely great for massages and somewhere your husband will feel comfortable going to as well.

Getting in Touch with My new Polish Side

Having married into a Polish family (well half Polish) I naturally wanted to try some Polish food. When my friend was here a few weeks ago, we all went to Greenpoint (naturally) to try some authentic food. My husband had been to a place last year called Krolewskie Jadlo ("King's Feast) with his father, who immigrated here a long time ago from Warsaw and gave his stamp of approval.

It's a neat little place, very small and very understaffed. But you get the sense that grandma is the only one in the back cooking your food, so you can't complain. The food is very inexpensive and the portions are large so definitely go hungry. The Polish plate was I think $8 and you get pierogies, kielbasa, potato pancakes and something else that was basically meat wrapped in cabbage. All very good - just can't remember the name.

Summer Concerts

It's gross, cold and rainy today so naturally my mind has drifted to thoughts of summer. I was reading brooklynvegan who has a bunch of concert information up for this summer. I used to really be big into electronic music, DJs and such, but have fallen out of that scene. Although it could be interesting to go see Paul Van Dyk at summer stage this year. Hmmm... also I would be interested to see Daft Punk at Coney Island. I heard this is the last year it will be open to the public and will be torn down to make condos. I have no idea if that is really going to happen, but that's the rumor. I also like some of Manu Chao's songs, but I don't know if it's enough to pay to see the concert.

Parrots in Brooklyn

Wild South American parrots are seen, with pigeon “friends,” near Brooklyn College. The parrots have actually been roosting in the borough for decades, after most likely escaping from shipments from Argentina in the 1960s or ’70s.

Rikers Going to Burst

Apparently Rikers is overflowing with prisoners and wants Brooklyn to help take the load off. I am sure the new developments in Downtown BK will love this. For those of you who don't know where the Brooklyn Dept of Correction is, it's on Atlantic Avenue on the way to Target.

Bon Jovi Comes to BK

Bon Jovi hits BK by picking up a hammer and pitching in to help Habitat for Humanity.

"On Tuesday, along with volunteers and money from Delta Airlines, the group committed to build two Habitat projects in Brooklyn -- affordable housing for working families in need. Delta recently donated $750,000 to the Bon Jovi-Habitat effort."

85 Adams

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but people have moved into 85 Adams. Looks like the lobby is fully finished but it's unclear as to when the construction adjacent to the entrance will be complete. This is the location for the infamous feng shui zen garden.

Going to Miami

Well, that's the plan so long as Jetblue comes through. We have a flight out tonight and of course the weather is nice all week and then decides not to cooperate today.

Please keep your fingers crossed we'll get out safely tonight and will be on the beach tomorrow. I am in dire need of some sun and vacation time so I really hope everything works out as planned.

DUMBO Population Expected to Triple Next Year

According to the Brooklyn Heights Courier, a new plan from the DUMBO Business Improvement District (BID) seeks to reopen the archway of the Manhattan Bridge at Water Street between Adams Street and Anchorage Place to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The

Additionally, the Pearl Street Triangle would be turned into a “Town Square” offering a venue for special events and public markets.

Also, the www.dumbonyc.org Web site predicts that over the next year DUMBO’s residential population will triple from 2,000 to 6,000.

BID will hold a public meeting for input on the planned project at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 22 at the DUMBO BID office, 111 Front Street, suite 258.

"Global Feminisms" Exhibit Set to Open at Brooklyn Museum

A new exhibition titled "Global Feminisms" is set to open March 23–July 1.

"Global Feminisms" assembles works in a range of media by more than 100 women artists, most of whom are under 40 and two-thirds of whom have never before presented work in New York. Some 50 countries are represented, including a good number that seldom figure in the contemporary art discourse, such as Sierra Leone, Kenya, Russia, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Taiwan.

T to Grow Slowly Underneath Second Ave

From Gothamist, the Second Ave subway project gets underway again.

There are a ton of comments on this post already. My two cents is that having previously lived between First and Second avenue, I think the new T line is much needed to reduce congestion and prevent the lazy (i.e. me) from having to walk to Park to catch the subway. Unfortunately, it's still ten+ years away.

I do agree with some of the comments, including perceived lack of express tracks, lack of extension into Alphabet City and lack of attention re: expanding cross town subway options and subway issues in the other boroughs.

Magic Johnson backs Brooklyn condo project

Interesting project in Greenpoint being financed by the former Lakers player.

Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his joint-venture partner, Canyon -Johnson Urban Fund, will provide $12.4 million of financing to help build a 130-unit condominium project in the growing Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.

The Green Street project will offer one-, two- and three-bedroom units, targeted at single professionals or young families who cannot afford Manhattan real estate prices. Bank of New York has provided a $41 million loan for the project.

15 East - "No Philly Cream Cheese Here"

After work last night we went for a drink at Park Bar, meaning my usual after-work happy hour crew of three people, including myself. Anyway, afterward we decided to go to a new sushi restaurant next door called 15 East, which has been reviewed as it's been open for a few months now (I think).

We wanted to see a menu before walking in, but decided to take a risk and once we went in there was no turning back. As it turns out, we weren't disappointed. However, if you crave spicy tuna roll or something wretched like an Americanized Philadelphia roll, you should go somewhere else.

The menu is very traditional and offers a mix of sushi dishes and entrees from the kitchen. We had a yellowtail appetizer and a special appetizer of scorpion fish. The waiter was awesome and he even brought out a book after our appetizer to show us what the fish looked like! It was small, striped and had weird wisker-like tentacles. Something you'd see in a tropical fish tank. The good news is that he knew what it looked like because they get all their fish whole (i.e. fresh!).

Then we had some sushi pieces - nice selection by the way - including artic char, different grades/types of tuna and some nice NZ king salmon. There was also a really good toro/jalepeno roll that pretty much just melts in your mouth. The service was impeccable and the decor was very simple. However, you might feel underdressed in jeans and a sweatshirt.

My husband went so far as to say it was on par with the experience at Gari East, my favorite sushi restaurant, minus Gari's ridiculously good spicy tuna roll. I don't know if I'd go that far, but it came close.

Wow, do I feel lazy now ...

Found this amNewYork story via a post on Gothamist about extreme commuters, which profiles this woman who rides her bike 200 blocks a day. Not to mention she works 12.5 hour shifts at Mt. Sinai hospital.

Speaking of feeling lazy, on a tipsy cab ride home last Friday our friend Lisa mentioned that she often runs home after work. FYI, she works at Rockafeller Center and lives in Red Hook. Imagine working a 10 hour shift on your feet and then running home? I can barely make it across the BK Bridge and back...

Wild Edibles coming to DUMBO

Great news about Wild Edibles coming to DUMBO as part of Foragers Market on Front Street. Hopefully they will offer the same "steam" service for lobster that they do at the Murray Hill location. I make a really great lobster roll, if I don't say so myself. I'll have to share my recipe when it gets a bit more spring-like outside ;-)

I remember actually liking Foxy B at one point

Just came across something about Foxy Brown on MTV News about a press conference she held at her local Brooklyn church on Monday, protesting her innocence over her arrest last week on battery charges.

Seriously, that is some PR work right there but come on, it's all too transparent. Sadly, I used to really like Foxy Brown, well one of her albums at least. I even saw her in concert and was very disappointed when I realized she couldn't sing for her life. Oh the power of electronic distortion and beats.

And then in a related search I came across this blog post that talks about the demise of Brooklyn's hold over the hip hop community.

There was Foxy, Lil Kim, Mos Def, Fabolous, Talib Kweli, Memphis Bleek, and a few others putting in work for the rap game. But now? Most are sitting on the sidelines and, try as they might, are failing to catch a rebound.

It's kind of interesting to think about. And isn't Mos Def living in DUMBO or something? Anyone know where?

Bridge Apothecary Coming Soon

Super duper cool news for DUMBO residents. Just read on my pal dumbonyc's blog that we're indeed getting a pharmacy in the near future. The pharmacy will be called Bridge Apothecary, located mid-block on Jay Street.

No more treks to Duane Reade or CVS, which is closer. Seriously, I know it's not far but I'm lazy and like the convenience of having something closer. I like Peas & Pickles but it's overpriced for certain things. I'd like to be able to pick up my perscriptions in the hood.

I feel like so much is going to change when everyone moves into JCondo. And yes, I know, I am not the original DUMBO crew, but all I know is how the neighborhood is now and I hope it doesn't change too much as I really like it and the quietness of the streets.

Great Recipe

I love Giada De Laurentiis from the Food Network. I recently tried a new recipe for Sicilian Penne with Swordfish and Eggplant that I saw her make on her show Everyday Italian.

I halved the recipe and there was still plenty for four people. If you don't like swordfish, you could probably substitute chicken or even a less expensive fish like tilapia. But with the recipe in half, the fish wasn't expensive at all.

It was really delicious and worked well as lunch leftovers the next day. In fact, everything she makes from this episode looked really good.

Fairway too, becoming a mob scene

I usually do my grocery shopping on Sunday if I go to the store. Most of the time I try to use FreshDirect instead. But in recent weeks Fairway has just become a mob scene.

Yesterday, the word of the day was patience. I don't have a lot myself but it was horrendous.

First off, there isn't enough parking. People who do drive there can't drive, excluding myself of course. I waited forever for this woman to load up her car and pull out and finally when she did, she started making scary faces at me through her window as she wanted me to back up more for her to get back. The reality is that someone could have parked a yacht in between me and the back of her car. NY State needs to get her license revoked.

The place is designed to force traffic to move in one direction, moving from produce, to cheese/deli, to seafood, to organics to dairy and bakery, and then at last to frozen foods before check out. But what if you are like one woman I saw on Sunday who is at frozen and realizes she forgot something in produce. You're basically screwed and you might as well go somewhere else on your way home to avoid pissing off everyone else. Not to mention the fact the isles are too narrow so you have to go almost single file. God forbid you have to pass someone... it's really tight.

Then on the way to and from the grocery store, you're lucky if you don't lose a tire or a bumper. The roads are so horrible with major potholes everywhere. It's just a disaster. Then there is a detour on the way back.

Luckily, I like the quality of the product, which is what keeps me coming back.

F Train Makes Me Want to Say "F$%&@"!!!

I could not agree more with this Gothamist post about the recent delays and overcrowding on the F Train. I usually catch one shortly after 8 am and while the frequency isn't so much a problem, it's getting so crowded. Earlier in the year I always got a seat. It's not like I am lazy, I sit all day long it's more that I have totally noticed this as well.

Then on the way home ... please don't get me started on this topic. Going home on the F is a nightmare after work. It's usually super backed up. You end up waiting forever and then when the train finally comes along it's fully packed. You squeeze on, looking over your shoulder to plot your escape route for when your stop finally does come along and then ... the worst news ever: "THIS TRAIN IS RUNNING EXPRESS....." right past my stop. Sucks for me! That means I have to get off the train at the next stop, wait for another 20 minutes for the F Train that is supposedly right behind the one I just got off, delaying my commute by another 30 minutes.

The best part is that the V trains are just hanging out, all empty across the track. They fly by with no passengers. I totally agree with the proposal to extend the V into BK. It would be great.
I am just so worried that when the extra 500 people move into DUMBO at the end of 2007 that this will just get more out of control.

Plus, on the weekends my friends get totally stranded on the way. The F is usually not running or running on a different track entirely. Most of my friends live on the East Side in Manhattan so treking over to the ACE is out of the question. I wonder why no one comes to visit us!!

I really, really like this place. That is Rebar, in Retreat on Front Street. We went yesterday to check it out on the way home from work and ended up staying for two drinks and some appetizers. The bar was full, always a good sign.

It has a lot of seating at both the bar and at tables for more privacy. The bartender Luke was incredibly knowledgeable about the beers on tap and the wines they were serving, which is not always the case these days. He even bought us a round!

We ordered the small cheese plate and small mixed olives, and received a very generous portion of both for less than $10 together. My husband liked it so much he wants to go back tonight for dinner. I am looking forward to trying some of the other tapas selections soon.

My new favorite beer is ST. Bernardus Witbier. Really good and it comes in a cool glass. They also have live music on Thursdays. If you haven't already, definitely check it out.

Brooklyn Brews

Also, forgot to mention we went to Brooklyn Brewery for a long overdue tour on Saturday. It was so informative, fun and worth it, considering you can sample a wide choice of their brews for 2.50 each. Great deal and a fun way to spend the afternoon.

Nothin Like a Long Weekend

I cannot tell you how excited I am to have today off from work. I feel bad because I know some of my friends are at work right now. Sorry! Anyway, I am staying warm inside and catching up on Anthony Bourdain's travels.

Yesterday, my husband and I were out in the city for most of the afternoon and decided to go for an early dinner at Al Di La, one of our, if not our, favorite places in Brooklyn. We figured we had some time until they opened so we went to a bar across the street. It was pretty cool. The Lighthouse Tavern had some regulars there watching basketball and the game, and they had a pool table in the back. We had a few pints and then headed over to Al Di La thinking we would be so early. We get there at 5:30 and the place is packed. Like super packed, so much so there was only one table left in the wine bar. We gladly took it.

I can fully understand why this place is always packed. I have waited 2 hours for a table on the weekend and it's 100 % worth it every time. In fact, for comparison, we ate at the new trendy STK Steakhouse in Meatpacking on Saturday. The atmosphere was cool, trendy, upscale. But the main course - steak - just wasn't great. The appetizers were great and the dessert was good but you would just think that the steak would be amazing considering the whole restaurant is built around the concept. So our dinner at STK with drinks was nearly double our dinner at Al Di La (that included a bottle of wine) and it was 100 times better.

If you haven't been yet, you have to go... but go early. My favorite is the pasta with meat ragu, but the specials are always amazing. They have a winter white salad on the menu right now that is shaved raw vegetables and it's really good. My husband even liked it. Just remember, no reservations and get there early.

"Brooklyn: no longer Manhattan's poorer cousin"

An article by AFP compares Brooklyn to Manhattan noting that "average price of an apartment in Manhattan now stands at 749,000 dollars, the equivalent in Brooklyn is 491,000."

The story also highlights the development of the Williamsburg Savings Bank by Magic Johnson (a little fact I was not previously aware of) into luxury apartments. Some are on the market for up to 3 Mill.

Jonathan Adler Sale

My friend just sent me a link to a sale going on at Jonathan Adler. If you're not familiar with the store, they have really nice apartment things -- very similar feel to West Elm but more upscale.

Worth Every Penny

The River Cafe was amazing. The service was excellent, the food amazing and the atmosphere couldn't be more romantic. I was really expecting to see some couples get engaged.

I know we only live a few blocks from the restaurant but I didn't want to walk in my heels all dressed up so my husband was going to pick me up. Then our stupid car got stuck outside on Washington Street!!! A nice couple helped push it off to the side and we left it and walked there.


It was freezing but memorable. We took some pictures along the way and they definitely captured the moment.

In the restaurant itself, there were lovely flowers in the entrance. So many that it looked like a flower shop. That's a picture of it above. All the ladies got a goodie bag upon exiting, which included a potted plant, a pansy. It was a sweet touch because in the restaurant all the tables were adorned with pansies so it was a memorable gift to take home.

Onto the food... I had the BeeGee Shrimp (roasted shrimp stuffed with crab meat) and the Lobster Tail (poached and the claw meat was used to make a lobster cake, like a crab cake). It was prix fix so you have to get the good stuff :-)

Then, incredibly full I managed to eat most of my chocolate Brooklyn bridge cake. It was really pretty and I felt bad eating it, well, sort of... they had sugared rose petals on the plate with a strawberry sorbet and some sort of custard. Delicious.

It was also really nice because we were there for a good two hours. We didn't feel rushed and it was an experience I'll never forget.

My Romantic Date Tonight

My husband is taking me to the River Cafe. I know, super fancy, but hey I deserve it ;-)

I am really excited. It's such an incredible experience dining at the River Cafe and they have a special menu tonight for the holiday. We ate there with his parents during the summer and being on the water was so tranquil. As the lights go down, you're floating on the water enjoying a fine dining experience. The Brooklyn Bridge dessert is a work of art!

A story in The Brooklyn Paper offers a round-up of Brooklyn businesses where you can buy sweet treats for Vday. I forgot to mention that we recently got some desserts from Baked in Red Hook. They were incredibly decadent and delicious.

My husbund picked out some assorted mini dessert "bars," which in reality were enough for 3 people each. They were about 3x3 in and came in flavors like Rocky Road, Peanut Butter & Jelly and Pecan Pie. All amazingly rich. I think Forragers carries their cookies.

Brooklyn Record points to a story from the NYTimes about experiences in finding roommates in the city. The article specifically examines how CraigsList has changed this process, focusing on Williamsburg as a key location where "coolness" is a factor in selection.

I remember college dwelling. Then, with my husband I remember when we first moved in together. It was in his studio when we were dating and I would go home on occasion to get clothing from my apt, which had essentially become an expensive closet. I just got sick of traveling back and forth (it was a whole 3 blocks). Luckily, we get along really well and he's not female. I find that living with other woman is challenging. Too much estrogen.

Sharing space is hard -- especially when it's an incredibly small space. It's just unnatural to share living space with other people - whether it's your friend or a stranger. Living space is so personal and sometimes you just want some alone time. Unfortunately, living solo in the city is muchos expensive and unrealistic for most everyone without a trust fund.

Jacques Torres in V-Day Mode

After my burger yesterday, we stopped into Jacques Torres. I mean, how could you not? The smell of chocolate is intoxicating -- in a good way of course -- and they are doing some special things for the upcoming holiday of love.

They have these cute pre-picked truffle combinations that include two of my favorite flavors: menage-a-trois and love bug, which is key-lime pie flavored. It's really good. The other is a chocolate liqour flavoring. Either way, both are delcious.

But above that, the chocolatiers were busy making these extraodinary chocolate heart boxes that were beautifully designed and filled with what else... more chocolate!!

If you get a chance, you should go check them out. They are pricy but would make a really special, memorable out of the ordinary gift for someone you love. I couldn't find a picture online, so you'll have to see for yourself.

Five Front in NY Daily News

Five Front was highlighted in a Valentine's Day round-up today. The menu looks really nice and well priced. I do like that restaurant.

Hangover Cure

After our wine party last night I wasn't feeling so hot today. We were craving a burger from J.G. Melon, which has the best burger. Period.

We've been to Corner Bistro too and I just don't think it's as good as Melons. Anyway, the effort needed to get to the UES was non-existent so we mustered up the energy to get off the couch and go to Water Street Restaurant.

We've been here a handful of times and there are some things they do really well and others they don't. Two of the things they do well are burgers (not like Melons, but definitely good) and they have a crispy (read=fried) sandwich. It was actually pretty busy, but they had one poor guy taking orders for the entire restaurant.

They had some nice live music too, but of course we got the last table right next to the stage so we couldn't hear each other, which was actually OK too because we were useless and considered getting newspapers so we didn't have to talk to each other. NOT because anything is going wrong, but just because we were shot and it was hard to hold an interesting conversation. Luckily, the girls next to us were having a pretty spicy conversation that was fun to listen to and the singer from the band was hitting on all of them.

So the conclusion is that burgers are great for hangovers and if you're in DUMBO, try the one from Water Street Restaurant. And if you're up for a little mission, go to Melons.

TGIF! DUMBO as a destination

So my friend from Manhattan, who doesn't venture to Brooklyn on many occasions, is coming to my house this weekend for a little soiree we're having. She was telling me how her friend was having his birthday party at a bar near my house, which was strange given all the bars in Brooklyn. In any case, her friend who lives in Cobble Hill is having his birthday at Rebar, the new bar in Retreat. That link goes to a review on DumboNYC's blog.

It's just interesting to think of it as a destination bar and I wonder if it will increasingly become so? I mean it's a great space in a prime location -- right next to the F and a little bit more of a hop, skip and a jump from the A, C trains. The beers and wine list are reasonably priced too. Mmmm, Tapas is available too.

I haven't actually been to Rebar yet but I have been to Retreat many times for coffee and shopping. I love that place. The people who work there are super nice and I especially like this one picture on the wall near the Coffee Box where one guy is "crushing" the other guy's head, which is from an SNL skit I believe. Anyhoo... I may go this weekend and check it out. It is open until 4, which is way past my bedtime and still something I can't quite grasp after living in Boston for several years.

"Red Hook" Barbie Doll Web Spoof

My close friend alerted me to a spoof on the Web that features Barbie Dolls designed for different neighborhoods, some of which are Brooklyn neighborhoods, and another embarrassingly accurate portrayal of Greenwich CT barbie, where I went to high school.

While the "Red Hook" and "Park Slope" Barbies are probably the most amusing, I don't know if I agree they are accurate portrayals.

For example, I didn't realize that Park Slope was perceived as a largely gay area? Not that there is anything wrong with this but it's not like the obvious thought when thinking about an area like Chelsea.

The Red Hook Barbie is really funny, but living so close to the area and seeing how far it's come, makes me sad that this is how the doll turned out. Maybe I am naive. I remember the reaction I got from my parents when I told them about how I go grocery shopping in Red Hook and how there are some really great restaurants. When they lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Red Hook was just not a safe area. I don't know if I'd want to live in Red Hook, mainly because it's still largely in transition mode, it's inaccessible (I have a hard enough time getting ppl to come visit me in DUMBO) and the roads are terrible. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Alma and Baked, which I adore. The views from Fairway are beautiful too.

New Restaurant Search Engine

What a great topic: food + technology!

In my other life I work in technology. I came across a new search engine that was launched at DEMO, a long-running conference that happens twice a year where many companies launch a technology for the first time with the hopes of making a splash and getting some VC cash.

One company that was highlighted in coverage of the most recent DEMO Conference was Boorah. It's referred to as "Zagat's on steriods."

A search for restaurants in zip code 11201 returns no results, but if you type in "Brooklyn" you'll get a drop down menu for Brooklyn or "Brooklyn Heights,Brooklyn,NY." I picked the latter and up came a bunch of choices for restaurants. There is a social aspect in that you can review the restaurants. They each have a buzz factor (Noodle Pudding is at the top) and then you can click around to see the reviews, get directions, see a map, etc.

Not so sure whether I would say this is better than CitySearch, which I love. Especially since it's still in beta form and only focuses on venues in SF, NY and LA. What do you think?

Is this for real?

I still use my phone when driving... I can't get into those headsets. Come on, arrest me. But now I can't listen to my freaking iPod while walking to the F Train in the morning? This is ridiculous. I mean, if this is the plan to reduce traffic accidents involving New Yorkers J-walking, this is not a solution.

MTV Just Makes Me Feel All Warm Inside

Seriously, I am like obsessed with MTV. Not the videos... I like the cheesy programming. I can watch the same episode over and over again. My latest obsession is Dance Life and I still kinda like the new season of the Hills. The show that is an off-shoot of the Laguna Beach show, with the former main character Lauren working in the big-girl world.

So, what does this have to do with Brooklyn you ask? Well, much to my delight, I just read that MTV will be filming a pilot about Brooklyn. Unfortunately, I totally don't qualify... not that I would really want to be on MTV. It's open to Brooklyn Tech Sophomores and Juniors.

MTV's newest soon-to-be hit show is Brooklyn. The premise is to paint an accurate picture for America of what life is like for the average Brooklyn high school student. The infamous Fort Greene projects, artsy DUMBO...[I guess that makes me artsy DUMBO. I don't think that's what the real artists in DUMBO would call me]... upscale Brooklyn Heights and the soon-to-be arriving NBA Brooklyn Nets. With 2.6 million people packed in Brownstones, tenements and multi-unit apartment complexes, Brooklyn is a jumble of cultures, creeds and economic strata. The last sentence sums it all up. It's acutally not suprising that MTV would focus on Brooklyn for a new show. Brooklyn has been in the media spotlight for sometime now. They probably have a Real World back to NY "again" slated for production in the near future. I'll totally watch this Brooklyn show when/if it comes out.

How I Survived Being Offline for 25 Hours

I didn't realize just how attached I am to my TV and laptop until we lost cable and Internet on Saturday afternoon around 4 pm. Time Warner told us it was a planned outtage in DUMBO and the Heights and that it would be back later that night, not to worry.

So we watched a movie and went out for dinner, and when we came home, the TV was still black. We thought about watching another movie, but we ended up laying on the couch in our apartment enjoying the blackness and silence that surrounded us.

When we awoke on Sunday, we expected the TV to work and unfortunately it was still off. We called Time Warner again (this was like our 8th time) to ask if they understood just what day it was and how important it was for us to have TV today. My husbund opened up his call to Time Warner by saying, "I'm nervous...," which was totally understandable given that it was Superbowl Sunday, one of the most important days of the year to have cable. We were told that the planned outtage was now an unplanned outtage but no one had any status updates, but they were doing everything possible to get it back up. They just told us that they were located in Flushing and they too, had no cable service.

We came back from breakfast at Bubby's, which was packed (hard to tell if more than usual). We talked to the bartender, who had only agreed to work that day cause he figured at least he could watch the game on the TV at the bar. After we got home, it was still out. We retreated to the bed where we listened to music and read the paper. It was really relaxing and nice for a change.

But then, around 3 pm, when the cable hadn't returned, we started to get really nervous. What if it wouldn't come back in time for the game? I had tracked down one of the TWC workers on the street in my hood who had promised it would be back but it was coming down to the wire. Plus, I am not a huge sports fan but we were having people over and needed to make a call.

Finally, around 4:45 we had made a call to go to our friend's apt on the UES. I forced my husband to watch an episide of Dance Life, my new obsession on MTV. At exactly 5:01, the TV came back. We literally jumped up and down in the living room. It was kind of sad that the TV affected us so much and we didn't know what to do with ourselves. Maybe the cable should go offline more often...

Late Winter and Early Spring... Love it

Phil the groundhog emerged from his little hole in Pennsylvania and did not see his shadow. Apparently this means Spring will come early this year. Hey, I'm all for it!!!

The itneresting thing is that hil had seen his shadow every year since 1999 before today. Read more here.

According to Wikipedia, "Groundhog Day is a traditional festival celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It is a cross-quarter day, midway between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox.

Totally Off Topic... But Have You Seen this Dog?

It's been all over the news and I found a clip on Google Video. Fox25 did a report and said the dog taught himself. He just jumped on the skateboard one day and off he went!!!

Reach out and touch ... a truck

A story in the NY Post looks at a new brownstone on Court and Garnett in Carroll Gardens. Units sell for $3,000-3,600 for 1,000 to 1,100 sq ft.

The article pokes fun at what tenants can look forward to seeing out their windows:
jaw-dropping, scenic views - of the truck-filled, exhaust-choked Gowanus Expressway

To be honest, I look at the Brooklyn Bridge (gorgeous!!!) and the BQE. The traffic is constant, the trucks are loud and I can't imagine it is smog-less, but I love it just the same. It wouldn't be nyc without the noise, which after a while just fades into the background. The story says that tenants won't need to get a traffic report... it's the same for me as I can tell the weather and time 24/7 without even going outside.

I think this is the building the article was talking about.

Rebar

Saw this last week and didn't get a chance to post anything. Gothamist reports that Rebar has opened upstairs in Retreat. That's the coffee box in DUMBO. The owner is really nice and I am glad to see more space is being transformed in that building. I look forward to trying the tapas. $3 for 3 bites sounds good to me!

Anyone been yet? What's the verdict?

Update: Well, now I feel like a loser because I didn't realize the thrift store's merchandise was based on donations. Thank you to ClatieK for pointing that out to me and sending me a link! Now I will have to go bring some things down there. Sorry to anyone for my rant... I should have done my homework first, but I am just sick of "vintage/thrift" stores with junk that sells for hundreds of dollars. Now GO contribute and get down to Housing Works Thrift!

I playing around on the Web and came across this Brooklyn Heights blog (just added it to my blogroll on the right check it out). I had tried to go there previously through another blog in the past and hit a glitch, but seems back up and just fine now.

There was a thread going about the Heights and how it's changed over the years. As a newcomer I haven't had much time to notice many changes, but over the summer my employer gives us summer fridays (yes, you can be jealous) so I used to walk to Montague and walk around and get TastyD. One of my favorite stores is Fishs Eddy. They have the coolest china patterns. I know, you're thinking to yourself that china does NOT equal cool, but if you could see what they have you would likey.

On Sunday, I was on Montague and noticed it was gone. I was disappointed because I had been meaning to get this lovely Brooklyn platter, but I'll have to get it in Union Sq near my office.


Now there is some "vintage store." I don't know what qualifies as vintage these days, but the jeans there look like they got picked up from the salvation army. I saw some from Express and then some of the dishes look like leftovers from the boring collections, of which I must admit there were a few, from Fishs Eddy. Lame......

I think Montague could use some help from a retail perspective. Some of the stores have seen better days. Even the Banana Republic there sucks. It's super small and they never have any good sizes. And WTF is CT Muffins? I know it's a chain but I spent my high school years in CT and seriously, muffins are not a specialty there or anything. It's weird. Not like NY Bagels or something, which totally makes sense. And while we're on the subject, why does the Ann Taylor Loft have to be so big? What does that say about our neighborhood? I am not averse to chain stores, at least they have a dedicated customer base and attract steady traffic.

If you could add your dream store to Montague, what would it be? And if you've had a CT Muffin, let me know if it's good cause I'll totally go get one to eat my words so to speak :-)

Iron Chef House Review

I was pleasantly suprised by my Iron Chef House sushi dinner last night!!! (Not that I don't trust my sushi tipsters but I am a skeptic when it comes to sushi and know what I like.)

I didn't have high expectations as it was, since I was ordering it for a delivery. Usually, as soon as you put sushi in a little delivery container, the asthetic of it goes away and it loses some of it's appeal. But I was hungry and I think the food arrived in less than 10 minutes, which is just incredible.

I ordered a mini-feast so I could taste some of the essentials and get a feel for the quality and variety. I got a salad (loved the Japanese ginger salad dressing), steamed shrimp shumai, a fancy spicy tuna roll, a spicy shrimp and crab roll, and a spring roll (not the fried kind; rather a regular sushi roll but without rice and wrapped in rice paper instead of seaweed).

Everything was really delicious. Better than Miso, in my opinion. There was ample wasabi, the soy sauce came in individual containers rather than 8 thousand packates, and most importantly, the fish quality was really really good.

I would like to go to the actual restaurant and try some sashimi and sushi pieces as well, to get a better feel for the place. For some reason I can't deal with delivery sashimi... it's just a bit weird to me.

In any case, I will definitely be ordering again and suggest you try it if you haven't already.

False Alarm

I had gotten an e-mail yesterday that a movie was being filmed at the Brooklyn Bridge and not to be alarmed by the military vehicles and choppers. There are going to be 1,000 people for an evacuation scene, but it's on the Manhattan side of the bridge so I won't be able to see much, except for the lights, which were super bright for a few hours last night. The story is all over the news so that people know what's up.

From the New York Post:

"Don't be alarmed by the fleet of Black Hawk helicopters and military ships converging on the Brooklyn Bridge tonight - it's only the new Will Smith movie, police said yesterday. For the next eight days, these mock military vehicles and more than a thousand extras will shoot an evacuation scene for the next Big Willie blockbuster, 'I am Legend.' The post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick is due out this December."

Sushi Tip

A fellow sushi lover left me a post suggesting that I try Iron Chef House sushi in Brooklyn Heights after reading a post from several months back about the lack of quality sushi in the area. I admit I am a sushi snob but I am willing to try anything. So, this week I'll give it a go and let ya'll know what I think. Here is a link to the main Web site.

Last week I was looking to see what units were available in my building and was suprised to see that the apt next door to my former apt still hadn't sold. Unfortunately with all the construction over there I think current owners are trying to get out while new owners are waiting for construction to be completed. I met two nice couples in the hallway here the other day and they were looking to buy in my building. Incidentally, they both currently live in a luxury rental building a block from where I used to live in Murray Hill. They seemed pretty sold on the neighborhood after speaking with them so hopefully they will migrate to Dumbo.

SNOW!!!

I felt like a little kid waking up to snow this morning. It was really exciting!!!
Of course, it's mostly melted now but it was nice while it lasted and I'm sure there is more to come. I took some pics on the way to the subway this morning.

Overpass Flowers Closing?

Anyone else notice that the florist on Washington Street next to Rice seems to be closing? It was called Overpass Flowers but I walked by the other day and it was closed and appeared there was nothing inside the shop. I think it might be the case as now Peas & Pickles is selling flowers in front of the store. Perhaps they were there the whole time and I never noticed.

Brooklyn Heights Movie Theater

We finally saw a movie at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema on 70 Henry Street and it was much nicer than I had expected. Sure it doesn't have all the features and bells & whistles of a multiplex, but there were no previews or annoying advertisements prior to the movie. There was a big screen, popcorn, fresh coffee, pixy sticks, soda, candy and cushy seats.

I'm not sure how much business they do there so I hope it stays around for years to come. I like the UA Court Street facility a lot; I just prefer walking down the street to the Heights instead of to the downtown area. The place has a nice feel to it. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

The Doctor's In -- my mouth is healthy

After a commenter told me to "get my mouth examined" if I thought the food at Noodle Pudding was amazing, I decided to go there for dinner again to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, or rather, my mouth. As I thought, everything was delicious. I had the taglietelle bolognese and my husband had the special pasta with a lamb and olive ragu and we both left very happy. We started with fried calamari, which were delicious and ended with a chocolate hazelnut torte. I had a glass of wine at the bar and my husband had one at the table. Our check was about $60 dollars. I definitely recommend Noodle Pudding on Henry if you haven't tried it yet.

Just being lazy on this very foggy Sunday afternoon. I came across some articles about Brooklyn restaurants I thought I'd share ...

From New York Magazine, "A New Breed of Restaurants," highlights 15 local restaurants . I've heard of some of them and been to others on the list, but there are many I had never heard of and look forward to trying.

I have come across this article before, also in New York Magazine (no affiliation), where writer Adam Platt names his top five picks for 2006. I really would like to try Applewood and 360 this year.

NYT Spotlight on Park Slope

I am sure many of you are familiar with the Real Estate section in the Saturday section of the New York Times. This week it's focused on Park Slope. Check it out.

Comme Ci Comme Ca

That's all I can say about Le Petite Marche and our experience last night.

The waiter, the hostess and everyone else was very nice and attentive. The decor was really nice (only one bathroom though) but very dark. I realize the feel they were trying to acheive but it was too dark. It was also busy. We opted for the table in the window, cause we hate sqeezing into the sea of rows of tables for two that so many restaurants in NY have. It was nice and private but the menu was on the window next to my head so everyone that came by and wanted to check out the menu, it felt like they were right on top of me, which was slightly annoying.

On to the food. The bread was really good... as expected it was a baguette and then instead of butter, it was a roasted garlic spread which may or may not have also had butter in it. I ordered a salad with goat chees brulee, as they called it. Very nice and different from the traditional goat cheese salad. The two rounds of goat cheese had been sprinkled with sugar (it wasn't over powering) and torched like the dessert would be. My husband had the escargot and was disappointed they didn't arrive in the traditional french escargo plate where each is seperated into it's own garlicy goodness. Still he said it was good, but not great.

Moving on... we both had steak frites. It was very traditional and cooked well to our liking. However, the cut of meat itself wasn't that great. It was kinda fatty and since it was so dark it was hard to tell which pieces were the fat. The frites were good. If I were to go back, which I probably wouldn't considering Henry's End and Noodle Pudding are right next store and the food is always amazing, I would have gone for the moules frites.

So all in all, the food was good, not great. If you want a really great bistro experience go to Artisinal, Balthazar or Pastis. The bill was still nearly 100 so I would have rather been at another restaurant.

Tonight's the night

We're going to Le Petit Marché for dinner and I'll let everyone know if it's as good as Time Out says:

"If the moules frites, escargot and bouillabaisse (pictured) don’t give it away, the reproductions of Renoirs and French bottled beer should: Le Petit Marché is as French as they come. The 50-seat restaurant, on quaint Henry Street, serves only classic bistro dishes. 46 Henry St between Cranberry and Middagh Sts, Brooklyn Heights (718-858-9605)."

Getting Out ... Just in Time

I found a link to this story in the NYO from Gawker. I too recently sold a condo in Manhattan to move to Brooklyn. We got out after two years, in large part due to the slow, but soon to be accelerated demolition of the Con Ed building between Tudor City and Murray Hill. I totally sympathize with the guy profiled in the story.

When we first moved into our former building, which recently turned condo at the time, we were thrilled at the idea of a fully renovated apartment. But as buyers new to the real estate market, we didn't think about what life would be like in the building as they gutted the lobby, gave the exterior a face lift, and gutted the apartments above us and on either side. At the time I was working from home and seriously wanted to kill myself. At the stroke of 8 am every morning the construction noise began. They were also rebuilding our terrace, which took a year longer than promised, and every morning there would be people outside my bedroom window smoking cigs on my terrace. It was a living nightmare.

Once the internal construction subsided, we noticed the buildings around us were evolving. The smoke stacks at Con Ed were slowly coming down. Our lovely view of the East River was sure to disappear in the coming years. We didn't want to live through it or listen to it. Now if you drive by where the Con Ed stacks were, you can peer in (from the FDR) and see what a disaster and eye sore it is. They are also building a new condo building on 34th and Third. And just to one side of my old building they are building another building.

While on the bright side, this new construction promises significance business boosts and neighborhood improvements to the Murray Hill neighborhood. But if you don't have an escape, take a cue from me and this guy and get out while you can...

For Those Obsessed With Real Estate

I wouldn't call myself obsessed, but definitely quite curious, as I often find myself searching through property listings in Brooklyn for fun. I like to know what's out there...I think I get it from my mom.

For those like me, I highly recommend the Yahoo Real Estate search. I believe it's powered by Truilla, a real estate Web search engine that offers markers on a map to property listings - another cool feature.

Brooklyn Looks Good in Blue

I just came across a story in the New York Daily News that said Brooklyn was included in something called the "Blue List," an annual list of the top destination spots by travelguide publisher Lonely Planet.

This is the first time the borough has made the "To Go" section of Lonely Planet's Blue List, a collection of travel ideas submitted by readers and staffers. Other Brooklyn recommendations range from the well-known - the hot dog-eating contest in Coney Island - to insider favorites like a Slope bed-and-breakfast or dinner at the Carroll Gardens Mexican restaurant Alma.

Three's The Charm. Promising French Cuisine Close to Home.

After taking my two friends with us for dinner on Saturday night to Henry's End, we emerged from the restaurant to find a new French restaurant had popped up next door. Already blessed with fantastic Italian food (Noodle Pudding) and a range of options from fish to wild game at Henry's End, the addition of a French restaurant is certainly welcome.

The restaurant, called Le Petit Marche, was bustling. A man smoking a cigarette outside said he was dining there that night and knows the owner. Inside, candlelight and exposed brick set the scene for a cozy, warm experience (which wasn't necessary given the 70 degree temps on Saturday, but will be something I look forward to in the coming weeks).

Better Sushi than Gari?

I am always open to new sushi restaurants but find I am usually disappointed. I was looking at CitySearch's best sushi of 2006 review and think I may have to try Kiki and Gen in Brooklyn. As you all know, I adore sushi and just can't believe that any place could be better than Sushi of Gari East on 78th and First Ave or a little-known place called East in Milford, CT.

I also went to a place called Pokie on the upper east side that has expanded and is super busy. It's BYOB, which makes it very popular, but it's not Gari quality. It's definitely better than average and delicious though. Try the truffle roll.

As for the others, let me know if you've tried either place ...
