Newsday.com reports that the MTA plans to expand service on the L subway line, adding 23 new round-trip runs on weekdays and 30+ on weekends. The expanded services is expected to cost about $2.6 million a year.

TGIF Must Read: My Empire of Dirt - NYMag

If you haven't already, pick up a copy of New York Magazine with the cover story, "My Empire of Dirt," or read it online if you prefer.

It is one of the most well written, interesting articles I have read in long time. It offers first-hand perspective from a Brooklyn "farmer" on the locavore moment, a mantra where people should endeavor to eat food grown within 100 miles of where you live.

They sent Fox's "Anne About Town" to his farm this morning, but the segment doesn't do it justice. You have to read the article.

Brooklyn Bowling...I'm so There

Gothamist has a post on the soon-to-be-opened bowling alley, The Gutter. It's apparently the first bowling alley to open in Brooklyn in a long, long time. I have had a bowling craving for the past few months so this is great timing!

West Nile Case Reported in Brooklyn

A Canadian publication reports that a 41-year-old woman from Brooklyn has been confirmed as the first human case of West Nile virus by the New York City Health Department.

"The 41-year-old woman though became sick in the middle of August. She had a headache, fever, felt tired and weak, and also had muscle pain. She was put in the hospital on August 25th and is now back home recovering. She has now been confirmed as the first human West Nile case of the season for New York CIty."

Sopranos For Real! Botched Brooklyn Mob Hit

(NY Post) "The son of one of 'Dapper Don' John Gotti's trusted capos narrowly escaped an old-fashioned mob hit yesterday when a bullet grazed his head in a drive-by shooting in Brooklyn's Mafia heartland ... Robert DeCicco, whom feds identified as a 56-year-old mob associate, also was shot three times in the arm during the botched rubout in his car at Bath and 17th avenues in Bath Beach at about 10:15 a.m., cops and witnesses said."

Parrots in Brooklyn

Wild South American parrots are seen, with pigeon “friends,” near Brooklyn College. The parrots have actually been roosting in the borough for decades, after most likely escaping from shipments from Argentina in the 1960s or ’70s.

DUMBO Population Expected to Triple Next Year

According to the Brooklyn Heights Courier, a new plan from the DUMBO Business Improvement District (BID) seeks to reopen the archway of the Manhattan Bridge at Water Street between Adams Street and Anchorage Place to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The

Additionally, the Pearl Street Triangle would be turned into a “Town Square” offering a venue for special events and public markets.

Also, the www.dumbonyc.org Web site predicts that over the next year DUMBO’s residential population will triple from 2,000 to 6,000.

BID will hold a public meeting for input on the planned project at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 22 at the DUMBO BID office, 111 Front Street, suite 258.

"Global Feminisms" Exhibit Set to Open at Brooklyn Museum

A new exhibition titled "Global Feminisms" is set to open March 23–July 1.

"Global Feminisms" assembles works in a range of media by more than 100 women artists, most of whom are under 40 and two-thirds of whom have never before presented work in New York. Some 50 countries are represented, including a good number that seldom figure in the contemporary art discourse, such as Sierra Leone, Kenya, Russia, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Bridge Apothecary Coming Soon

Super duper cool news for DUMBO residents. Just read on my pal dumbonyc's blog that we're indeed getting a pharmacy in the near future. The pharmacy will be called Bridge Apothecary, located mid-block on Jay Street.

No more treks to Duane Reade or CVS, which is closer. Seriously, I know it's not far but I'm lazy and like the convenience of having something closer. I like Peas & Pickles but it's overpriced for certain things. I'd like to be able to pick up my perscriptions in the hood.

I feel like so much is going to change when everyone moves into JCondo. And yes, I know, I am not the original DUMBO crew, but all I know is how the neighborhood is now and I hope it doesn't change too much as I really like it and the quietness of the streets.
